What is Counseling?

Counseling is when a person who may be having a difficult life experience talks with a person with special training (a counselor) who can help. A counselor helps people get through experiences similar to what happened to you. Talking to an experienced counselor can help you become stronger, happier and independent. It can help you recover.

Counseling may last for a few weeks or several months, depending on your needs.

Counselors can help you

  • Understand the problem
  • Decide what is important to you
  • Think about what to do next
  • Put your feelings and needs into words
  • Find your own strengths and identify resources in your environment
  • Recognize beliefs, habits and attitudes that may be hurting you
  • See things from a new point of view
  • Make the changes you want to make

All of the counselors at the VIP/Rape Crisis Center are highly trained and experienced in addressing the needs of those impacted by violence and abuse.
