Burn Center

Established in 1962, the Parkland Burn Center is one of the largest civilian burn units in the nation. The center houses a Burn Intensive Care Unit, a Burn Acute Care Unit and a Burn Care Outpatient Center. View a tour of the burn center here.

Burn Care

Parkland’s Burn Center is the first adult and pediatric burn center in North Texas verified by the American Burn Association – a status Parkland has maintained since 1996. This achievement recognizes Parkland’s dedication and commitment to providing high quality burn care to patients from North Texas and the surrounding areas. The center is a comprehensive burn unit that provides the newest research, technologies, and products for the treatment of burn-related injuries that result from flames, chemicals, electricity, and scalds. We also provide treatment for complicated skin infections and disorders.

More than 2,000 burn victims are cared for annually at Parkland and more than 800 pediatric and adult burn patients were admitted to the hospital in 2021 for inpatient care. Patients are also seen for follow-up care in the Burn Outpatient Care Center.

Recovery

Our advanced burn care goes beyond the four walls of the hospital. Parkland’s team of physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, social workers, child life specialists, rehabilitation team, burn psychologist, and outreach coordinator is available to help patients and their families as they recover from their burn injuries. The burn center provides many resources to patients as they transition back to daily life. Some of those services include youth burn camps, school re-entry, support groups, adult retreats and survivor reunions.

Our Burn Center maintains Burn Center Verification status by meeting the criteria of the American Burn Association’s Burn Center Verification/Consultation Program. This means the center meets the highest standard of care for burn patients as approved by the American College of Surgeons.
