External Training & Education Opportunities

There are a host of training opportunities outside of Parkland Health & Hospital System. The resources below offer conferences, discussion groups and classes on research administration.

Note

Before research can be initiated using the UTSW IRB, the following training MUST be completed:

  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Human Subjects Training
  • Conflict of Interest Training
  • Research HIPAA

Access the CITI Research Required Training page for more information. After finishing the required training(s), please keep a copy of each document for your records.

Good Clinical Practice (GCP)

Good Clinical Practice (GCP): GCP is an international quality standard that is provided by International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH). GCP Guidelines include standards on how clinical trials should be conducted, defines the roles and responsibilities of clinical trial sponsors, clinical research investigators, and monitors and includes protections for human research participants in clinical trials.

Good Clinical Practice: A Question & Answer Reference Guide
Addresses the most frequently asked questions in clinical research. Provides FDA supported interpretation of regulations in answering the questions. Updated yearly.

CenterWatch
CenterWatch’s training guides are “must-read” resources for those interested in clinical research and for seasoned professionals seeking to better understand their roles and improve the management of their clinical trials operations in a safe and ethical manner.

Human Subjects Training

All members of the research study team must complete Human Subjects training. This can be completed using one of the two sites listed below. A certificate of completion for each member of the study team must be maintained.

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

NIH RCR Training Requirements:
The NIH RCR training requirement applies to all Institutional Research Training Grants, Individual Fellowship Awards, Career Development Awards (Institutional and Individual), Research Education Grants, Dissertation Research Grants, or other grant programs with a training component that requires instruction in responsible conduct of research as noted in the Funding Opportunity Announcement. NIH allows some flexibility for some short-term grant projects. The NIH Requirement for Instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research can be found at http://grants.nih.gov.

RCR online course(s) that meet the NIH requirement:

NSF RCR Training Requirements:

NSF requires that proposing institutions certify that a plan is in place to provide appropriate training and oversight in RCR to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers who will be supported by NSF to conduct research. Institutions that receive research funding are responsible for documenting that this requirement has been met.

NSF permits institutions to determine the content and the delivery method for the training, whether through pedagogical methods or from some existing sources or capabilities. NSF does not specify time frames for completion of the training. Information on the NSF requirements can be found at http://www.nsf.gov
