Taking medication during pregnancy
Some medicines can hurt your baby if you take them when you are pregnant. But sometimes you may need to take medicine for a headache or if you have a health problem like diabetes or high blood pressure.
If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, talk to your doctor about any medications, herbs or vitamins you are taking or plan to take. Your doctor can tell you what is safe to take at different stages of your pregnancy.
These are some things that affect how your body handles medicines during pregnancy:
- How much medicine you take.
- When during the pregnancy you take the medicine. For example, aspirin can harm your baby if you take it in the last three months of your pregnancy.
- Health problems, like high blood pressure.
- Other medicines you take.
Do not start or stop taking any type of medicine without first speaking with a doctor. To learn more, call 214.266.4000 to make an appointment at a Parkland clinic near you.
