Having your baby at 39 weeks
The March of Dimes says if possible, it is best to stay pregnant for at least 39 weeks. If your pregnancy is healthy, wait for labor to start on its own. Getting to at least 39 weeks gives your baby‘s body the time it needs to grow.
You may not have a choice about when to have your baby. If there is a problem with your pregnancy, your health or your baby’s health, you may need to have your baby early.
Some reasons why your baby needs at least 39 weeks:
- Important organs, like the brain, lungs and liver, get the time they need to develop
- It decreases the chance of your baby having vision and hearing problems after birth
- The baby has time to gain more weight
- The baby can suck and swallow and stay awake long enough to eat after being born. Babies born too early sometimes can’t do these things
Scheduling an early birth when it’s not medically needed can cause problems for mom and baby. Always talk to your doctor or health care provider about the best way to have your baby.
