Digital displays improve patient safety

New Parkland is going digital to improve patient care and safety. Electronic displays outside each inpatient room, known as patient room statuses, present a quick snapshot of a patient’s key information to staff entering the room. The patient room statuses will offer an easy way for health care providers to get important up-to-date information about a patient such as name, allergies, what language the patients speaks, name of doctor and if those entering should wear isolation gear such as a mask or protective gown.

To protect patient privacy, the screens will display the necessary information using universal icons that will be easily recognizable to staff. The devices will decrease the potential for mistakes that can happen with hand-written notes by pulling the latest details directly from the patient’s medical record. This means shared information will show up on the digital displays every time a doctor or nurse inputs care instructions into the patient record, keeping communication about the patient’s status up-to-date.
