Parkland Sports Medicine provides a comprehensive approach to caring for and managing sports injuries and conditions. Many of the new technologies and techniques in this field have been evaluated and/or pioneered at Parkland. The Parkland Sports Medicine team offers cutting-edge expertise in the evaluation and treatment of a broad range of sports-related conditions and injuries.

What is sports medicine?


Sports medicine is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of injuries related to physical activity.

The most common sports injuries are:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear 
  • Rotator cuff tear
  • Labral injury (hip or shoulder)
  • Shoulder dislocation/instability
  • Ankle sprains
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Biceps tendonitis

Consists of a team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, physical assistants, physical and occupational therapists, athletic trainers, nurses, and medical assistants who work together to provide medical care for the active lifestyle. Meet Parkland's Director of Sports Medicine

Nathan Boes, MD is Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and the Director of Sports Medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He specializes in sports medicine injuries involving the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee; joint replacement; and cartilage restoration. Meet Parkland's Sports Medicine Program Director

Ryan Peña, MS LAT ATC joins Parkland as our Sports Medicine Program Manager with extensive experience in athletic training, most recently in a large public school district where he served student athletes and managed a team of sixteen athletic trainers at eleven different high schools. Ryan leads our efforts to grow our outreach and service lines for sports medicine.
