Parkland launches new Web pages for Spanish-speaking community

Custom healthcare content geared to specific needs of Hispanics

Healthcare-related information and resources are now easier to find for Dallas County residents who are more comfortable speaking and reading in Spanish. Parkland Health & Hospital System has launched ¡INFORMATE! – new Internet Web pages with extensive Spanish-language content geared specifically toward the Hispanic community.

The new pages are not merely a Spanish translation of existing Parkland Web pages, but are designed with custom content to best serve the needs of Spanish-speaking Parkland patients and their families, as well as all county residents.

“With the launch of ¡INFORMATE! Parkland is providing a valuable tool to help improve the quality of life for the people of Dallas County,” said Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia, DDS. “¡INFORMATE! is a great resource for the community, a place where people who prefer or need to communicate in Spanish can get comprehensive and reliable information about healthcare.”

The ¡INFORMATE! site currently contains health-related information, a collection of health videos in Spanish from sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as a link to Parkland’s monthly Spanish-language newsletter A Tu Salud. The printed version of A Tu Salud is distributed at 86 non-Parkland locations throughout the community.

“At Parkland we are committed to providing culturally competent care, in all areas,” said Ildemaro Gonzalez, Parkland’s Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer. “¡INFORMATE! is another example of how we are constantly working to enhance our patients’ experience and develop a true connection with them and the community.

In addition to the resources provided on these Web pages, ¡INFORMATE! also offers comprehensive information about healthcare occupations. These pages provide details on education and training needed for specific jobs, and related salary information.

“¡INFORMATE! is an excellent resource for people who are interested in learning more about employment in the field of healthcare,” Dr. Garcia said. “The healthcare industry continues to be one of the most robust sectors of the economy and that is great news for people looking for jobs and careers.”

The jobs information illustrates that there are a wide variety of healthcare jobs in addition to doctors and nurses available at Parkland and in the community.

These occupations range from physician assistants to social workers, medical interpreters, physical therapists and coding specialists, among others. Not all healthcare jobs require extensive education, and Parkland is an excellent place to enter the field and work toward other goals. Above all, many of these jobs allow individuals to care for people at the time of their greatest need and make a real difference in the lives of others.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, almost 45,000 healthcare jobs were created in October. And, for the year 2015 so far, almost 407,000 healthcare jobs have been created. That compares to the 410,000 jobs the industry added in 2013 and 2014 combined.

“We encourage the Hispanic community to visit the ¡INFORMATE! pages to become familiar with the information they provide, and especially encourage everyone to let us know their thoughts about the pages and offer suggestions about how we can continue to meet the needs of all our patients and their families,” Gonzalez said.

Of the almost 295,000 patients Parkland treated last year, 55 percent were Hispanic. Each month, Parkland has 75,000 patient encounters with people who speak a language other than English; about 92 percent of these are in Spanish.
