Parkland health center brings after-hours care to Southeast Dallas

Community clinic now open evenings to better serve priority ZIP Code

Many factors can get in the way of seeking healthcare, including access to transportation, work hours, childcare and more. Parkland works to eliminate as many barriers as possible for Dallas County residents in efforts to improve access to care.

That’s why Parkland’s Southeast Dallas Health Center, located at 9202 Elam Road, 75217, is now open in the evenings to address the needs of the community. Extended hours will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

“Our goal at Parkland is to identify key barriers that are getting in the way of our community’s access to health services and then create solutions,” said Christina Mintner, Parkland’s Senior Vice President of Population Health. “We understand that people work during the day and may have less flexibility with their work schedule and childcare, making it hard to see a provider during regular hours.”

In focus groups conducted for the 2022 Dallas County Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), participants were asked to name reasons that could prevent them from going to a medical appointment. Frequent changes to work schedules and not being able to get off work during clinic hours were reported as the top concerns.

The CHNA also identified significant health disparities in southern Dallas County and documented the incidence of diseases across racial and ethnic minorities, socio-economic factors, underserved populations and access to care. Parkland used this data to strategically target residents in ZIP Codes with the highest morbidity and mortality rates. 75217 is among the seven priority ZIP Codes in Parkland’s Access to Care initiatives.

“We also looked at the number of non-urgent emergency room visits from ZIP Code 75217 and surrounding. We hope that by providing extended hours, we can help reduce non-emergent utilization of our emergency room,” Mintner explained.

Southeast Dallas Health Center is one of Parkland’s 15 Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) health centers. The COPCs operate across the county offering primary care, pediatrics, pharmacy and specialty healthcare services. The clinics also offer walk-in immunizations on Wednesdays, making immunizations like the flu shot easily accessible to families. The recently approved COVID booster shot will soon be available at Parkland COPCs as well.

Services provided at Southeast Dallas Health Center’s after-hours include:

  • Primary care services
  • Sick visits
  • Care for chronic diseases and illnesses
  • Pharmacy
  • Lab services
  • Radiology

In addition to the community clinics, Parkland operates health pop-ups at various community centers in the county, as part of the Access to Care & Coverage Program. This network of health pop-ups serviced by Community Health Workers was created to connect residents to services, screenings and information in their own neighborhood with an emphasis on prevention and education.
