Neonatal ICU creates calm place of healing

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU) offers a temporary home for our tiniest patients with major health issues at the time of birth. For this reason, the NNICU can be a place of stress.

When designing the NNICU in the new Parkland hospital, it was important to give parents and visitors a visible way to quickly navigate the unit, which is five times larger than the NNICU at the current hospital. With that in mind, “lake”- and “forest”-themed areas were developed using natural colors and symbols like ducks, dragonflies and birds to distinguish one area from another. In addition to helping our visitors navigate the unit, the themes and colors reinforce our effort to put the “park” back in Parkland. Back
