How to use a backpack safely

If your child is starting school this month, check their backpack to make sure it’s not heavy. Using backpacks the wrong way can hurt your child’s muscles and joints. They can get back, neck and shoulder pain. Tell kids to pay attention to their bodies and take things out of their backpack if they start to have pain.

Carmen Wilson, a pediatrician at Parkland, says to follow these tips to protect your child’s back.

  • The size of the backpack should match the size of the child.
  • Only put things your child needs for the day in the backpack.
  • Put the heaviest things in the backpack first.
  • Make sure backpacks have padded straps.
  • Always use both straps of the backpack.
  • When picking up backpacks, bend at the knees.

If you think your child may have a backpack-related injury or would like more backpack safety tips, speak with your primary care provider. You can also call 214.266.4000 to make an appointment at a Parkland clinic near you.
