How to prevent birth defects

How to prevent birth defects

If you are thinking of having a baby in the near future, it is important to take care of your health to prevent potential birth defects. To ensure you have a healthy baby, start taking care of yourself now. Some ways you can take care of yourself include:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Eating healthy
  • Exercising
  • Controlling your stress
  • Going to your primary care provider for an exam every year

In addition, Parkland experts recommend the following to prevent possible birth defects:

  • Take 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day. Folic acid helps prevent serious birth defects of the spine and the brain, such as spina bifida and anencephaly
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid drugs, alcohol and smoking anytime during pregnancy
  • Talk to your doctor about any medicines you may be taking during pregnancy
