Eye injuries at home
Your home is usually a safe place but some things you do can cause bad injuries to your eyes. Things in the house that can hurt your eyes include oven cleaners and bleach, cooking foods that splash hot oil, mowing the lawn, and putting screws or nails into walls or hard places like cement.
Try to use some of these tips to help keep your eyes safe at home.
- Read the labels of chemicals and cleaners carefully, and don’t mix different cleaning products.
- Check that spray bottles for cleaning are pointed away from your face.
- Make sure rugs are not loose so you don’t slip or fall.
- Put something soft on the edges of furniture if you have children or older people in the house.
- Check the lawn (grass) where you will be working to make sure there’s nothing that can pop up into your eyes when you start to cut the grass.
- Keep tools in good condition.
- Don’t get too close to the stove when frying foods.
- If you can, get special glasses to keep your eyes safe while working at home.
If you think you have hurt your eye badly, don’t try to treat it at home. See an eye doctor as soon as you can. Call 214.266.4000 to make an appointment at a Parkland clinic close to you.
