How to stay safe in case of a tornado

Parkland experts recommend having a plan and practicing what you will do in case of a natural disaster such as a tornado. You never know when there will be a severe storm so it’s important to be prepared.

Follow the tips below to stay safe if a tornado is headed your way:

  • Don’t just rely on sirens to get weather warnings.
  • Sign up for weather alerts from the National Weather Service or a local news station on your cell phone or home phone.
  • The safest place to survive a tornado is in a storm shelter. The next safest place is on the lowest floor of your home, school or business.
  • Hide inside an interior room like a closet, hallway or bathroom. Stay away from windows.
  • Stay low to the ground and cover yourself with blankets, pillows or a mattress.
  • If you live in a mobile home and a tornado gets close, get out of the mobile home and find better shelter.
  • If there is no shelter available, lie flat in a nearby ditch and cover your head and neck.
  • Your life and safety are important. Do not go out during a storm to take pictures or videos.

When the storm is over, the damage can make it hard to travel or contact your family or friends. Make a plan with your family on how to meet up in case of a natural disaster.
