Preparing your child for their COVID-19 vaccine visit
12/27/2021
Getting a shot can be scary for some children. When the time comes for your child to get a COVID-19 vaccine, here are some tips:
- Talk to your child before the visit about what will happen. Explain to them that they may feel a little pinch but it will go away fast.
- It is not recommended to give pain relievers, such as Tylenol, before a shot to try to stop side effects.
- Tell the doctor or nurse about any allergies your child may have.
- Comfort your child during the appointment. Bring a stuffed animal or toy if needed.
- To prevent fainting and injuries related to fainting, your child should be seated or lying down during the shot. Stay seated for 15 minutes after the shot is given.
- After your child’s COVID-19 shot, you will be asked to stay for 15-30 minutes so your child can be watched for an allergic reaction. The provider will help if there is needed treatment.
- Remind your child that vaccines can keep us healthy.
Schedule an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine for your child who is 5 years or older. Children under 18 years old must be with an adult. The vaccine is at no cost to you.
