Breast Cancer: Myths vs. Facts
Confused about breast cancer? You are not alone.

There is a lot of information about the disease, but not all of it is easy to understand. Get the facts about breast cancer.

Myth: I’m only 35. Breast cancer happens only in older women.
Fact: While the risk of breast cancer increases with age, ALL women are at risk. Even women in their 20s can get breast cancer.

Myth: Only women with a family history of breast cancer get breast cancer.
Fact: Most women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease.

Myth: If I eat right, don’t smoke, exercise and don’t drink alcohol, I won’t get breast cancer.
Fact: A person can practice a healthy lifestyle and still get breast cancer.

Myth: Mammograms are unsafe and hurt.
Fact: The compression (squeeze) from the mammogram is quick, lasting for only several seconds. Mammography equipment is designed to minimize discomfort. To avoid any pain, do not schedule your mammogram close to the start of or during your period when breasts can be tender. Limit caffeine (soda, coffee, tea and chocolate) for one week before the mammogram to help reduce discomfort. The risk of harm from the radiation exposure is extremely low but the risk of not finding and treating a potential breast cancer is more harmful.

Early detection and treatment are the keys to surviving breast cancer. Call 214-590-0062 to schedule your mammogram! For more information on a breast health visit, www.parklandhospital.com/comprehensive-breast-center.
