Watch out for poison ivy

Poison ivy is a heat-loving plant that grows in the Dallas area during summertime. It is one of the most common causes for skin rashes in children and adults who spend time outdoors.

Poison ivy spreads very easily to other people. It is itchy and causes a red rash on the skin. Sometimes the rash will blister. You may not notice the rash until about 12 to 24 hours after your skin makes contact with poison ivy.

If you have been exposed to poison ivy, remove contaminated clothing right away. Wash the skin well with soap and water to try and stop the rash from spreading. Call 911 if you have a difficulty breathing or swallowing. This could be an allergic reaction to the oils in poison ivy.

The experts at the North Texas Poison Center can tell you how to prevent and treat rashes from poison ivy and other poisonous plants. Call the North Texas Poison Center 24 hours a day at 1.800.222.1222.
