Parkland patients to benefit from substantial gift
McKesson Foundation donation to support colorectal cancer care at Parkland
Parkland Health Foundation is grateful to announce a $500,000 philanthropic investment from the McKesson Foundation to support colorectal cancer care for Parkland patients.
This funding will help provide Parkland patients with a less-invasive, quicker alternative to a colonoscopy known as flexible sigmoidoscopy.
“Flexible sigmoidoscopy is an essential tool in the screening, assessment and treatment of patients with colorectal cancer,” said Umber Dickerson, Administrative Director of Global Cancer Programs at Parkland Health. “With this new technology, we can provide the best possible care to our patients and ensure their continued comfort and quality of life.”
According to the 2022 Dallas County Community Health Needs Assessment, cancer is the second leading cause of death in Dallas County. Nationwide, colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths overall. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer also disproportionately affects the Black community, where the rates are the highest of any racial/ethnic group in the US. Black Americans are about 20% more likely to get colorectal cancer and about 40% more likely to die from it than most other groups.
The McKesson Foundation’s philanthropic investment is a continuation of its commitment to remove socioeconomic barriers to quality healthcare for vulnerable and underserved communities. In 2022, the McKesson Foundation awarded a $500,000 grant to Parkland’s C.V. Roman Health Center in the RedBird Dallas neighborhood, expanding access to care to residents residing in southern Dallas County.
