Michael A. Horne, EdD, named Parkland Foundation President and CEO

Michael A. Horne, EdD, a career educator and social entrepreneur, is joining Parkland Foundation as President and CEO, succeeding David Krause who is retiring this fall. Dr. Horne is excited to join the Parkland Foundation team to further Parkland's mission of caring for the health and well-being of individuals entrusted to their care. Parkland's President and CEO Fred Cerise, MD said, "His demonstrated abilities to generate and inspire philanthropic investments in the North Texas community will benefit generations to come." Parkland's Camp CHAMPS encourages healthy living

Parkland's annual Camp CHAMPS encourages children and their parents to learn positive, healthy behaviors in fun and creative ways. Priscilla Fernandez, RD, discussed how the Camp CHAMPS instructors motivate children to make healthier choices through exercise, recreational activities and tasting new foods. Jeff Howard, Parkland Community Development Specialist, added, "We want to help kids learn healthy behaviors they can share with others and practice in all aspects of their lives, year-round." How healthy are natural fruit juices?

A new study found that 100% natural fruit juices are not always 100% good for your health. In fact, the study links sugary drinks and natural fruit juices to a higher risk of early death. Parkland cardiologist Parag Joshi, MD explained to KERA-FM how fruit juices and sugary beverages are empty calories that do not satisfy hunger, causing you to eat more.This habit can lead to obesity, diabetes, and even heart disease.

Parkland specialists offer tips for caregivers of dementia patients

Is your loved one showing signs of dementia? Parkland geriatrics experts recently shared some dos and don'ts for caring for people with dementia. Chiffon Kinney, RN with Parkland's Senior Outreach Services talked to D CEO Healthcare about ways to help family and patients understand the diagnosis. And Parkland's Geriatrics and Senior Care Center senior lead physician, Raja Paspula, MD explained how a healthy lifestyle can lower one's risk for developing dementia.
