Parkland Foundation CEO David Krause to retire in fall 2019
Fundraising career capped by campaign for new Parkland Memorial Hospital
David E. Krause, president and CEO of Parkland Foundation, has announced plans to retire in fall 2019. Krause has headed the Foundation since 2005. During his tenure, Krause, along with Foundation board and campaign leaders, successfully guided the most significant fundraiser in the history of the Dallas County public safety net hospital with the $150 million “I Stand for Parkland” campaign to help fund construction of the new state-of-the-art Parkland Memorial Hospital. The campaign secured the largest private charitable gifts ever made to a public hospital in the U.S. Opened in August 2015, the 862-bed facility replaced the aging hospital that served county residents for 62 years.
Other highlights of his career at the helm of Parkland Foundation include a $17 million campaign to build the Simmons Ambulatory Surgery Center, opened in 2007 and the ongoing capital campaign to construct a new comprehensive breast center at Parkland. With a lead gift of $15 million from the Moody Foundation, more than $36 million of the $40 million goal has been raised for the Moody Center for Breast Health, scheduled to open in 2021.
In announcing his planned retirement, Krause said, “My work on behalf of Parkland Health & Hospital System has been the most meaningful of my career. Parkland serves everyone from the very wealthy to the homeless and uninsured. Donors are the lifeblood that makes Parkland one of the finest public hospitals in the nation, providing quality care to those most in need. It has been a great privilege to serve alongside the incredible philanthropists, community leaders, medical staff, volunteers and employees who are dedicated to Parkland’s mission of caring for all.”
“The impact of David’s tenure at Parkland Foundation will be felt for generations to come,” said Parkland Foundation board chair Katie H. Robbins. “His leadership has set the bar and changed the face of public fundraising in Dallas County and beyond. We are grateful for his leadership and look forward to his continued commitment to improving the health of our community.”
“The resources secured by Parkland Foundation under David’s guidance have significantly advanced the health system’s goals and made a lasting difference in the quality of care provided to residents of Dallas County,” said Fred Cerise, MD, MPH, Parkland president and CEO.
“In FY2017, Parkland provided more than 1 million outpatient visits, 40,000 inpatient visits, approximately 244,000 emergency visits and nearly $880 million in uncompensated care. Without community support, we could not meet the staggering need for high quality compassionate care for Dallas residents. David has given his heart, energy and expertise to help build a brighter future for the most vulnerable among us. We are grateful for his considerable accomplishments,” Dr. Cerise said.
Krause’s 40-year career in philanthropy has included positions at two other prominent Dallas-based healthcare systems. Prior to joining the Parkland Foundation he served as vice president of the Baylor Health Care System Foundation from 1987 to 1995 and as senior vice president for development at Children’s Medical Center Dallas from 1996 to 2005. He conducted a national campaign for the Lutheran Church from 1984 to 1986 in Chicago in preparation for the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. From 1980 to 1984 he served as director of development at Christ Seminary in St. Louis, MO.
A native of Dallas and graduate of Hillcrest High School, Krause received his B.A. degree from Valparaiso University. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Christ Seminary. He served as pastor at the Peace Lutheran Church in Tifton, GA from 1974 to 1979. Krause is a certified financial planner (CFP) and holds the highest certification offered by the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy, the Fellows designation (FAHP).
Among his many volunteer activities, Krause serves on the board of the International Bonhoeffer Society, the steering committee of the “Go Forth” campaign of the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, the Advisory Council of Dallas’ Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center and chairs the board of the Lutheran Music Program, headquartered in Minneapolis.
Krause was named the 2010 Outstanding Fundraising Executive by the National Association of Fundraising Professionals. The award is given to a fundraising executive who practices in an exemplary manner and honors the commitment to philanthropy through voluntary service and financial support of nonprofit organizations.
The late Ron J. Anderson, MD, former CEO of Parkland, said of Krause, “David fell in love with Parkland’s mission and has done everything he could to further it to benefit our patients, our caregivers and our community. He knows his business and is a consummate professional. More importantly, he is a servant leader and a true friend.”
