Parkland Health expands hospital capacity with new patient care units

Additional beds to support growing demand, improve access to care

Parkland Health is expanding capacity at Parkland Memorial Hospital with the opening of new inpatient units that will add 112 beds over the next six months, helping meet the growing healthcare needs of Dallas County.

The expansion includes two new units in the hospital, with the first 56 beds scheduled to open June 1 and an additional 56 beds anticipated in October. The expansion is in areas of the hospital that had been previously shell space. Once complete, the project will bring the hospital to more than 980 licensed beds, making it one of the largest in North Texas.

“This expansion is about ensuring we can continue to meet the needs of our community today and into the future,” said Edmundo Castañeda, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President at Parkland. “As Dallas County continues to grow, we are seeing increased demand across our system. Adding capacity allows us to care for more patients and improve access to care.”

The new units are designed to support high-quality, patient-centered care while increasing capacity across the system. The additional beds are expected to improve patient flow and reduce emergency department wait times, address current and future capacity needs as well as support care for a growing population in Dallas County.

The first phase of the expansion is expected to open ahead of a significant influx of visitors to North Texas this summer during the 2026 World Cup, helping ensure the health system is prepared to care for both residents and visitors.

Parkland continues to align its growth with identified community needs, using data from its Community Health Needs Assessment to guide where and how it expands services.

“As our community grows, so does the demand for accessible, high-quality care,” Castañeda said. “We use our Community Health Needs Assessment to identify where the needs are greatest and make sure we are investing in the right places. This expansion allows us to better serve our patients and ensure access to care for those who need it most.”

To support the expansion, Parkland is actively hiring nurses and other healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines. To learn more about joining Parkland’s team, visit www.parklandcareers.com.

The hospital expansion is part of a broader effort by the health system to increase access to care across the region, including new community health centers across Dallas County designed to reach patients where they live and work.
