Parkland earns Gold Certification in Dallas Green Business program
One of first hospitals in Dallas to achieve Gold status in city’s Green Business program
Parkland Health has been awarded Gold Certification through the relaunched Dallas Green Business Certification (DGBC) Program, making Parkland Memorial Hospital one of the first hospitals in the city to receive the distinction. The certification recognizes organizations that go beyond meeting environmental standards and set a strong example for sustainability in their communities.
The new Parkland Memorial Hospital earned LEED® Gold certification when it opened in 2015. Today, the main campus includes six LEED® Gold buildings and is the largest ENERGY STAR® certified healthcare campus in the United States.
Parkland earned high marks across the program’s sustainability scorecard, including perfect scores in building efficiency and air quality, along with strong performance in transportation, solid waste, and leadership and policy.
“This certification highlights Parkland’s leadership in sustainable healthcare, and it reinforces our responsibility to create a healthier environment for our patients, staff and neighbors,” said Michael Wood, Parkland’s Senior Director of Facilities Support Services. “Achieving top marks across areas like building efficiency, air quality, waste diversion and renewable energy is the result of years of intentional planning and innovation.”
Recent accomplishments highlighted in the health system’s 2024 Sustainability Report include:
• 3% reductions in electricity and natural gas use
• 25%of total energy sourced from renewable power
• Diversion of 1,000 tons of materials from landfills through recycling, reuse, and donation programs
• A 38% reduction in anesthetic gas desflurane, cutting more than 600 metric tons of CO₂
• More than 571 tons of single-stream recycling, including expanded diversion in the operating rooms
Parkland continues to advance long-term sustainability initiatives, including low-emission vehicles, expanded food waste recycling, energy-efficient LED lighting, and better tracking of greenhouse gas emissions from operations, energy use and the supply chain.
“We’re proud to be one of the first hospitals in Dallas to receive this distinction, and we remain committed to pushing our sustainability efforts even further to benefit both our community and the environment,” added Wood.
