The best toy is a safe toy
Toy-related injuries treated in emergency rooms are common across the country. It became so common that December is Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month.
The next time you buy a toy or gift for children, consider these tips:
- Check all toys before buying them. Locate any warning labels such as choking hazards, which are usually found on toys with small pieces.
- Find the recommended age on the toy to determine if the child is old enough to play with it.
- Do not buy toys that have toxic materials such as lead paint. Babies put toys in their mouths. Swallowing unsafe things that can hurt a child or disrupt the child’s growth.
- Do not give toys with sharp edges or stuffed animals that are filled with tiny beads that could fall out if ripped open.
- Do not give toys that have ropes and strings that can get caught around a child’s neck.
