Receives awards from American Heart Association

Parkland Memorial Hospital today announced it has earned a quality achievement award from the American Heart Association (AHA) for proven dedication to ensuring all stroke patients have access to best practices and life-saving care.

The Stroke Gold Plus Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke quality achievement award recognizes Parkland’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.

Parkland also received the AHA’s Target: Type 2 Honor Roll award which aims to ensure patients with type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

“At Parkland we are dedicated to providing excellent care for patients who have suffered a stroke,” said Michelle Steiner, BSN, RN, SCRN, Neuroscience Clinical Program Manager at Parkland Health. “We are constantly working on improving our care of stroke patients in the hospital, but also educating the community on ways to help prevent future strokes and disability.”

Get With The Guidelines - Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

“We are incredibly pleased to recognize Parkland Memorial Hospital for its commitment to caring for patients with stroke,” said Steven Messe, MD, Chairperson of the Stroke System of Care Advisory Group. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for healthcare systems, families and communities.”

This award comes on the heels of Parkland earning a Certificate of re-Designation as a Level I Comprehensive Stroke Facility by the Texas Department of State Health Services in May. Parkland met specific scientific guidelines as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. As a state-designated stroke facility, Parkland is one of the few local hospitals providing continuous 24-hour advanced stroke care for both hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke.
