Parkland grief support groups offer healing

Provide comfort after loss of loved one

Grieving may be a natural and normal reaction to the loss of a loved one, but many find they need help managing it and learning how to heal. That’s the role of the grief support groups available at Parkland Memorial Hospital, which help people find the comfort they need.

Led by Chaplain Kyong Hee Kim who started the program six years ago, the support groups help people move through the stages of grieving.

“You need to go through grief for healing to occur,” said Chaplain Kim. “In order to have healthy healing you must live with and acknowledge the grief.”

Kim leads discussions about the process of grief, some myths and facts about grief, tasks of grieving and how to communicate with others about their emotions during her six recommended sessions based on “Life after Loss” from the American Cancer Society. By creating a secure environment for people to share their stories, she facilitates their healing and ability to cope and eventually move on to a place of acceptance of their loss. Kim believes that being in the company of others who understand grief helps to assuage the feeling of being alone in this dark time.

Parkland grief support groups meet regularly and are available for both English and Spanish speakers. Please contact Chaplain Kyong Hee Kim at 214.590.6853 if you plan to attend the grief support group or if you need one-on-one grief counseling. All support groups meet at Parkland Memorial Hospital, 5201 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, Texas, 75235.
