New Parkland's patient care is in the 'zone'

In the new Parkland, patient rooms will be divided into four distinct zones that improve both safety and comfort.

The size and arrangement of the zones for the new patient rooms were created through valuable input from Parkland’s Patient and Family Advisory Committee and our clinical staff. A full-size mock-up of a patient room was created so former patients, their families and Parkland staff could review, test and give feedback before Parkland built more than 800 identical patient rooms.

New patient rooms will include four different room zones:

  • Family zone allows the family to stay inside the room. Family support can provide comfort, reassurance and added safety to the patient. The family zone is adjacent to the room’s window and consists of a sleeper-sofa, a work shelf and cabinet as well as separate light control.
  • Patient zone is a designated area for direct support of the patient, usually centered around the patient’s bed. This area contains most of the medical equipment needed to care for patients as well as the tools for patient entertainment and education.
  • Caregiver zone is an in-room work space for the daily functions of physicians, nurses and other care support staff.
  • Hygiene zone includes a private bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower.

Safety and comfort are added to the patient experience with the zoned design. It’s simply another way Parkland is improving both the patient experience and safety. Other improvements to patient rooms include additional elements that create more privacy, reduce noise and relieve stress. This modern patient room design provides a patient-centered, healing environment using principles of evidence-based design.
