National Hospital Week at Parkland puts focus on care, compassion
Annual recognition is held May 11-17
Every day healthcare workers across the country stand witness as new lives enter this world and for those with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Like employees at Parkland Health, they have dedicated their professional lives to serving others.
The staff of Parkland is taking time during the second week of May to celebrate 2025 National Hospital Week, the nation’s largest healthcare event, by focusing on the rewards and satisfactions of playing a vital role in serving the community. This year’s theme, “We are Healthcare!” embodies the care and compassion Parkland staff provide to patients in the hospital and throughout the Dallas County community.
The week is an opportunity to recognize the more than 5,000 hospitals, healthcare systems, networks, and others who provide care in their communities, according to the American Hospital Association (AHA). “Our caregivers have taken on unimaginable challenges and have risen to the occasion repeatedly,” the AHA wrote.
The celebration coincides with the May 12, 1820, birth of Florence Nightingale, long revered for laying the foundation for modern nursing. Her writings sparked worldwide healthcare reform, and in 1860 she established St. Thomas’s Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in London.
“The mission of Parkland is written in the hearts of Parkland employees – we ‘advance wellness, relieve suffering, and develop and educate’,” said Fred Cerise, MD, Parkland’s President & CEO. “Having served in public health my entire career, I can tell you that a mission statement is only as strong as the people behind it. I’m proud to say that every day, I witness providers and support staff at Parkland who embody those meaningful words and bring our purpose to life.”
National Hospital Week dates back to 1921 when it was launched in Chicago to promote trust and goodwill among members of the public toward their local hospitals. Eventually, the celebration spread to facilities across the country.
