PGY1/PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency with MBA
The PGY1 Pharmacy/PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership (HSPAL) Residency program is a 24-month PGY1 and PGY2 training program centered on the development of the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to lead the profession of pharmacy into the future.
The matched resident completing this program will be competent and confident leader in multiple practice/operational areas and will be prepared to assume a health-system pharmacy leadership position upon program completion.
For the first year of the program, the resident will complete the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency. For the second year, the program is intended to provide the resident with both useful experiences and education through administrative rotations and didactic training. A Master of Business Administration degree will be obtained for residents that do not already have one concurrent with the residency through either Louisiana State University – Shreveport or Western Govenors University. Coursework topics will include organizational development, leadership development, managerial/health care finance, professional development, strategic planning, operations and marketing.
Residency Structure
PGY1 Learning Experiences and Requirements

Required PGY2 Learning Experiences
- Inpatient Operations (minimum 8 weeks)
- Ambulatory/Retail Pharmacy Operations (minimum 4 weeks)
- Revenue Cycle/Supply Chain/Pharmacy Informatics (minimum 6 weeks)
- Sterile IV/Hazardous Compounding Operations (minimum 4 weeks)
- Clinical Operations - Inpatient & Ambulatory (minimum 4 weeks)
- Pharmacy Senior Leadership (minimum 4 weeks)
- Interim Manager (minimum 6 weeks)
Elective PGY2 Learning Experiences
- External
- Apexus 340B Operations (4 weeks)
- Vizient Informatics & Supply Chain Leadership (4 weeks)
- Internal
- Any core learning experience may be extended and serve as an elective
- Additional elective rotations may be created based on the residents’ interests and RPD approval
Longitudinal Requirements
- Admin On-Call Coverage
- Every fourth weekend and 1-2 holidays
- Friday - Monday, 4:30 p.m. – 7 a.m.
- Staffing/Practice Management
- Every fourth weekend, 12-hr shift as ED Clinical Pharmacist

In addition, all applicants must be registered with the National Matching Service to obtain a match number.

- Three Letters of Recommendation (One from a clinical preceptor as assess clinical abilities and one from a manager and/or supervisor to assess dependability and work ethic are recommended)

- Minimum GPA of 3.1
Eligibility Criteria
- Graduate from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited Doctor of pharmacy degree program.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the residency program.
- Must be eligible to practice pharmacy in the State of Texas.
Interview Process
- Application Deadline: January 2
- Applications will be evaluated by members of the Residency Advisory Committee.
- Candidates will be contacted via phone as needed. On-site interviews are held during February. All on-site candidates will prepare a 20-minute presentation on a topic of their choice.
