Prescribing statins to lower cholesterol
Certain drugs, called statins, reduce the chance of a repeat attack in heart attack patients who have high cholesterol.
Why is this important?
When cholesterol levels are too high, the arteries can become clogged with fat and the chances of having a heart attack or developing heart disease and stroke increase. Statins are widely used medications that effectively lower cholesterol and reduce the chance of a future heart attack. We strive to prescribe these valuable drugs to all of our patients at risk for future heart attacks.

What does this graph show?
The graph indicates the percentage of Parkland heart attack patients who needed statins and received a prescription for them before they were discharged from the hospital, compared to both the Texas and U.S. averages.
