Prescribing aspirin to reduce future attacks
A daily dose of aspirin is often part of the ongoing treatment plan for heart attack patients after they leave the hospital to prevent future attacks.
Why is this important?
Some heart attacks are caused by blood clots in the arteries, which reduce the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. Aspirin helps keep blood clots from forming. Doctors prescribe aspirin for patients who have had a heart attack to help reduce the risk of future attacks.

What does this graph show?
The graph indicates the percentage of heart attack patients treated at Parkland who were prescribed aspirin when they were released from the hospital, compared to both the Texas and U.S. averages as well as the median performance for most academic hospitals in the U.S.
